Undergraduate Research Poster Session
by Swetha Akella

College of Chemistry undergraduate students, graduate students and professors gathered in the Chemistry library for the Saegebarth Undergraduate Research Fair, made possible through generous funding from Dr. Klaus and Mary Ann Saegebarth. 41 enthusiastic CoC undergraduates professionally presented their project in this poster session. Topics ranged from biochemical studies, spectroscopy, organic syntheses, imaging and more.

Dean Richard Mathies and Undergraduate Dean Marcin Majda presented outstanding awards to 25 undergraduate researchers. The awards included the College and Department of Chemistry Undergraduate Scholarship, the Tong Award, and scholarships from Stanley and Alice Thompson, Bruce Howard and Koo Liu Siok-Han. All awards were at least $1500 per recipient.

Julian Bigi, a graduate student in Professor Chris Chang’s lab, commented that “the caliber of research is high and the obvious enthusiasm with which the students pursue their research is inspiring and refreshing.”

Professor Michelle Chang expressed, “I am happy to see so many undergraduates take an interest in research because it is one of the great opportunities they have here at Berkeley, especially in the College.” Chang added, “Next year, I hope there will be more cookies.”

Dean Majda, who launched the fair, also expressed his thoughts afterwards, “I believe that undergraduate research should become an even greater and more uniformly accessible component of our undergraduate curriculum. Clearly, the Undergraduate Research Fair was organized to promote undergraduate research in the College. In view of the students’ interest last Friday, I am committed to make this a permanent annual event in the College.”
